Enzyme drug-metabolizing

Although the term may refer to any enzyme involved in drug metabolism and elimination, it is generally used to refer to the oxidative metabolism enzymes, metabolic pathway which includes most drug metabolism.Enzymes involved in phase I metabolism fare members of the cytochrome P450 family and perform the initial modifications of the drug to facilitate their inactivation and elimination.Phase II enzymes are conjugating enzymes, such as glutathione-S-transferase or the N-acetyl transferase, perform additional processing to remove the metabolites.Drug-metabolizing enzymes are the subject of numerous pharmacogenomics studies, since their alleles may determine drug efficacy and incidence of adverse reactions.
