Chromosome arm q

In an optical microscope the chromosomes present a form of stick with a constriction cane called centromere which divides chromosome into two arms of unequal size. Thelarger armis called “q”.The short arm was called “p” in “petite” from French, and the long arm, following the same approach should have been called “g” or “grand” but “q” was put as the letter following p in the ABC. This criterion – though illogical – has not been modified by any nomenclature committee.
