Cytochrome P450

Cytochrome P450 or P450 is the name given to a large family of genes encoding enzymes involved in the metabolism of various drugs, chemicals and biomolecules.

Special attention is paid to severalCYP450genes since they encode enzymes that are directly involved in metabolism of many drugs without prescription.

In some of these genes, such asCYP2C9,CYP2C19andCYP2D6 different alleles of these genes are associated with different ability to metabolize the drug, and therefore it directly affects drug efficacy and potential adverse effects.

There have been identified alleles related to null metabolic, decreased, normal and even increased activity for someCYP450genes.
