A biomarker is a biological molecule used in a diagnostic test to evaluate state or process, or severity and progression of the disease. For example, glucose in diabetic patients is used to assess the need for insulin and the presence and stage of prostate cancer can be assessed by determination of prostate specific antigen (PSA).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a biomarker is defined as “any substance, structure, or process that can be measured in the body or its products and influence or predict the incidence of outcome or disease
